Gen Z: The Generation Raised on Social Media

Social media has taken over the world as we once knew it. In a matter of about 23 years, social media has grown to the multi-trillion dollar industry it is today. Back in 1997, when one of the first social media sites was invented, the tech industry couldn't have had any idea what they had just created. Today, social media runs majority of childrens, young adults, and millenials lives. Even older generations can't help but become addicted to the platforms. In 2019 79 percent of US citizens reported owning a social media account- 79 percent.

Young, developing brains are simply not equipped to take in the amount of information at the rate social media provides.

One of the most significant changes in today's society due to social media is the relationship between the Generation Y and Z. Technology upended the superiority of parents among children and teenagers. Kids born into the age of social media simply have a much deeper understanding of technology and its navigation. This creates a divide between the generations. Because their parents are not as knowledgeable about something that controls virtually everything now, kids don't see them in the same authoritative light anymore. Parents are not fully equipped to give their kids advice on issues that social media brings, such as cyber bullying, body image, and constant comparison. These networking sites destroy confidence, influence hate, and create a divide among society as a whole.

For children to full grown adults, social media is purposely designed to create an addiction and attachment between the platform and the user. Every second of every day our devices are analyzing our movements: our searches, pictures, songs, apps, messages, etc. Our technology is programmed to predict our interests, possible purchases, songs we may like, all down to a font or color we tend to be attracted to. Ever think about the person who truly knows you best? Chances are it's the cell phone sitting beside you or the computer you're scrolling on.
